Congress MP and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi made a rare commendation of the ‘Make In India’ program on Monday. Speaking in the Lok Sabha during the Motion of Thanks on the President’s address, Gandhi acknowledged that Prime Minister Modi’s idea was good but failed to deliver results.
He said, “Make In India was a good idea, but the result is in front of you.” Gandhi highlighted that manufacturing has declined from 15.3% of GDP in 2014 to 12.6% today under the NDA government.
“I’m not blaming the Prime Minister. It’s wrong to say he didn’t try. But he tried and failed,” Gandhi added.
On unemployment, Gandhi pointed out that India has failed to address joblessness. He said, “Both UPA and NDA have not provided solutions to youth unemployment.”
He also criticized the President’s address, calling it repetitive and lacking fresh ideas. Gandhi suggested that an INDI bloc-led government would present a new blueprint.
Linking unemployment to social unrest, he noted the rising prison population and the growing budget for internal security as signs of increasing social tension.

Gandhi argued that India needs to improve its production system. “All governments since 1990 have done well in organizing consumption, but manufacturing has lagged,” he said.
He also talked about the future technological revolution, emphasizing four key areas: electric motors, batteries, optics, and artificial intelligence. Gandhi noted that AI relies on data, but India lacks its production data. He said, “China owns the production data, and the US owns the consumption data.”
Gandhi stressed the need for India to build its capabilities in these technologies and start developing production networks. He pointed out that China has at least a 10-year lead over India in using these technologies.
Finally, Gandhi called for educating children about these four technologies and ensuring India can access the data necessary to drive its AI revolution.
