Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, visited the residence of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday to pay his final respects.
Rahul Gandhi extended condolences to the family, calling Manmohan Singh a mentor and guide.
In a heartfelt statement, Gandhi stated, “Manmohan Singh Ji led India with immense wisdom and integrity. His humility and deep understanding of economics inspired the nation. My heartfelt condolences to Mrs. Kaur and the family. I have lost a mentor and guide. Millions of us who admired him will remember him with the utmost pride.”
Other senior Congress leaders, including Sonia Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, KC Venugopal, and Devendra Yadav, also gathered to honor the late leader.
Tributes poured in from across the political spectrum. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accompanied by Union Ministers Amit Shah and JP Nadda, visited the residence to pay homage and offer condolences to the grieving family.
Manmohan Singh, aged 92, passed away at AIIMS Delhi on Thursday evening due to age-related health complications.
He had collapsed at home before being rushed to the hospital.
The Congress party announced that the former PM’s mortal remains would be placed at the All India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters in Delhi on Saturday morning for public viewing.
The final rites will likely take place later in the day near Rajghat, at the designated cremation site for Prime Ministers.
Manmohan Singh
Manmohan Singh, born on 26 September, 1932, is an accomplished economist and served as the Reserve Bank of India Governor from 1982 to 1985.
He was India’s 13th Prime Minister, holding office from 2004 to 2014, making him the longest-serving PM after Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi.
As Finance Minister under PV Narasimha Rao’s government in 1991, Singh spearheaded India’s economic liberalization.
These reforms opened the economy to foreign investment, increased FDI, and reduced government regulation, driving significant economic growth.
During his tenure as Prime Minister, Singh’s government implemented significant policies such as the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) and the Right to Information (RTI) Act.
Dr. Singh also served as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (1982–1985) and recently retired from the Rajya Sabha after 33 years of service.
