Rescue operations are in progress to reach the 41 workers trapped inside an Uttarakhand tunnel for over 170 hours. Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, shared that the success of the auger machine drilling into the debris block is crucial for potential rescue within the next two days. Gadkari, along with Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, visited the collapse site, emphasizing the critical situation of the 41 lives hanging in the balance due to the tunnel collapse, a segment of the Char Dham project connecting Uttarkashi and Yamunotri.
Despite a week of relentless rescue attempts, challenges stemming from the rugged topography and the nature of rocks hindered progress. The trapped workers are receiving essential supplies, including food, water, and oxygen, as rescue teams intensify efforts.
Gadkari underscored the priority of preserving the workers’ lives, expressing optimism about a timely rescue if the auger machine performs effectively. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) is constructing roads to facilitate the arrival of specialized rescue machines, with two auger machines currently operational.
Chief Minister Dhami, in collaboration with the state government, assured full support to rescue agencies, highlighting the escalating challenges faced by the trapped workers each passing day. Various agencies, including those from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), are actively involved in the complex rescue operation.

Bhaskar Khulbe, former advisor to the Prime Minister, advocated for a multifaceted approach, suggesting simultaneous implementation of five rescue plans to expedite reaching the trapped workers. While estimating a potential rescue within four to five days, Khulbe expressed hope for an even earlier resolution, contingent upon favorable conditions.
