Controversial Statue Unveiled At RG Kar Medical College

A statue titled “Woman in Pain” was unveiled on Wednesday at RG Kar Medical College & Hospital as a symbol of protest against the rape and murder of a junior doctor. However, the installation has drawn criticism from Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh, who questioned its appropriateness.

In a social media post, Ghosh argued that naming the statue Tilottoma—one of the names given to the deceased victim by protesters—contradicts the Supreme Court’s guidelines regarding depictions of rape or murder victims. He stated, “The installation of this statue in the name of Tilottama is against the spirit of the Supreme Court pronouncement. No responsible person can do that. Not even in the name of art.”

Ghosh emphasized the importance of following established guidelines on portraying victims, stating, “The country has guidelines regarding Nigrahita’s pictures, idols, etc.”

The West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Forum (WBJDF), which is leading the protests following this tragic event, chose to unveil the statue to coincide with Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary and Mahalaya Amavasya, a significant day in Hinduism dedicated to honoring ancestors.

In addition to the statue installation, junior doctors plan to hold a protest rally in Kolkata later this afternoon to demand justice. Since resuming their cease-work action on Tuesday, the WBJDF has declared that they will continue the agitation until they meet their ten-point demands.
