On Saturday, President Droupadi Murmu celebrated Raksha Bandhan with children and students from diverse schools and organisations at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi.
The event was filled with heartfelt moments symbolising the sacred bond of protection and love traditionally shared between siblings.
The President’s office shared glimpses of the festivities on the social media platform X, showcasing President Murmu tying colourful rakhis on children’s wrists with the caption, “President Droupadi Murmu celebrated Raksha Bandhan with children and students of various schools and organizations at Rashtrapati Bhavan.”

This act honoured the traditional custom where sisters tie rakhis on brothers’ wrists, pledging protection and care. The President’s participation underscored the festival’s inclusive spirit and its message of love and mutual respect.
Earlier in the day, President Murmu extended her warm greetings to the nation, wishing all citizens in India and abroad well on this auspicious occasion. Her message emphasised the cultural significance of Raksha Bandhan as a celebration of familial bonds and protection.
She wrote, “On the auspicious occasion of Raksha Bandhan, I extend my warm greetings and best wishes to all fellow citizens living in India and abroad.”

PM Modi’s Festive Observance
Simultaneously, Prime Minister Narendra Modi observed Raksha Bandhan at his official residence at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg in New Delhi.
The Prime Minister received rakhis from children and members of the Brahma Kumaris organisation, exchanging smiles, blessings, and affectionate gestures that captured the festival’s joyous spirit.
Raksha Bandhan is celebrated on the full moon day of the Hindu month of Shravana. Traditionally, sisters tie rakhis on their brothers’ wrists, praying for their safety and prosperity. In return, brothers promise to protect their sisters and offer gifts.
Today, Raksha Bandhan transcends sibling ties and celebrates bonds of affection across families, including cousins, in-laws, and even spiritual communities.
The Sanskrit term Raksha Bandhan translates as ‘the bond of protection’, embodying love, duty, and mutual respect.
The festival continues to be a vibrant reflection of India’s cultural heritage, emphasising unity, care, and familial love.
Observed in neighbouring countries such as Nepal, Raksha Bandhan remains an important occasion to reaffirm the values that bind communities and families together.
In celebrating Raksha Bandhan, both President Murmu and PM Modi highlighted the enduring importance of these values in fostering social harmony and cultural continuity across India.
