Police And DMRC Personnel Will Patrol Delhi Metro Coaches Following Dispute Over Viral Videos

After a number of viral recordings of passengers sparked outrage in recent weeks, the Delhi Metro Rail Company has decided to increase patrolling by uniformed security personnel and staffers in plain clothes at stations and within trains, according to officials.

The most recent social media video supposedly depicted a couple cuddling while seated on the floor of a metro coach. The commuters were urged by the DMRC to “refrain from engaging in such indecent actions” as a result.

According to reports, the DMRC recently sent a letter to the Delhi Police urging them to increase patrols inside metro carriages and at stops to prevent such instances.

“In the light of recent videos, the metro is looking to improve security and surveillance by implementing several measures,” a senior official said.

“One such measure includes patrolling in trains by uniformed police personnel and plain clothes (DMRC) staff,” he said.

There are CCTV cameras in coaches on all lines, except on some old trains on line one. CCTVs are being installed in those coaches during the ongoing refurbishment process and also at metro stations to “monitor any objectionable activity”, the official said.

“This will help deter threats and inconvenience to passengers, including women,” he added.

The video of the couple kissing in a metro coach has enraged many social media users who urged the DMRC to take action in the matter. Others questioned the idea of filming the act.

The DMRC has also requested commuters to report such incidents to the “nearest available metro staff/CISF immediately so that appropriate action can be taken”.

The CISF is tasked with guarding the Delhi Metro premises and responding to any situation inside coaches.

For any suspicious activity, a dedicated Delhi Metro Rail Police officer is also on duty.

In April, a video that appeared to show a woman travelling in a Delhi Metro carriage while in scanty clothing went viral on social media, leading the DMRC to ask its passengers to practise social propriety.

Using its social media accounts, the DMRC has already pleaded with individuals not to film films or generate reels by upsetting other riders. According to a top source, the Delhi Metro Authority has a flying team that is active every day.
