PMK Founder Dr Ramadoss Seeks Meeting With PM Modi On Leadership Dispute

The internal leadership dispute within the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) intensifies as party founder Dr S Ramadoss seeks a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This follows the Election Commission’s formal recognition of Anbumani Ramadoss as the party’s President, which has deepened the ongoing father-son rift.

Both Dr Ramadoss and Anbumani have convened separate general council meetings, each claiming legitimate leadership of the party.

On August 9, Anbumani held a session that passed a resolution appointing him as party President.

After reviewing the records submitted on August 10 and 11, the Election Commission accepted the resolution and issued a letter confirming his leadership.

Ramadoss Camp Challenges EC Decision

The founder’s camp refuses to accept the outcome. Senior executives Murali Shankar, MLA Arul, and Swaminathan met the Chief Election Commissioner on September 17, urging the poll panel to withdraw recognition of Anbumani.

They also requested that the party headquarters be recognised at Thailapuram, Dr Ramadoss’ residence, rather than the address submitted by Anbumani’s group.

Despite these objections, Anbumani enjoys backing from the majority within the PMK.

Three out of five MLAs, General Secretary Vadivel Ravanan, Treasurer Thilagavathi Bama, most district secretaries, and over 90 per cent of general council members support his leadership. The Election Commission states that its decision reflects this overwhelming support.

Advisers close to Dr Ramadoss urge him to approach PM Modi directly. They argue that, while the BJP leadership supports Anbumani, the Prime Minister maintains respect and personal admiration for Dr Ramadoss, having met him on multiple occasions.

An executive aligned with the founder explains, “The BJP openly backs Anbumani, but the Prime Minister has always valued Dr Ramadoss. If he meets PM Modi, there is a chance to strike a balance and ease tensions within the party. That is why he has sought time with the Prime Minister.”

As legal and political battles continue, the PMK remains divided, with the father-son conflict threatening to weaken the party ahead of crucial state elections. Analysts suggest that the upcoming weeks could prove decisive for the party’s stability and influence in Tamil Nadu politics.
