PM Modi Pays Tribute To Guru Tegh Bahadur’s Enduring Legacy In Kurukshetra

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday honoured the profound courage and sacrifice of the ninth Sikh Guru, Guru Tegh Bahadur, during a state-level ceremony held in Kurukshetra.

Speaking at the event, he said the Guru’s steadfast defence of truth, justice and religious freedom continues to inspire millions across the world.

Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister observed that Kurukshetra had long symbolised the protection of righteousness, recalling Lord Krishna’s declaration that safeguarding truth stood above all duties. He noted that Guru Tegh Bahadur upheld the same principle, giving his life to defend the oppressed.

During the ceremony, the Prime Minister released a special coin and a commemorative postage stamp dedicated to the Guru’s martyrdom. He expressed pride that the government had been able to pay homage through these national tributes, emphasising the importance of preserving the Sikh tradition for future generations.

PM Modi, wearing a saffron headgear, highlighted Kurukshetra’s deep connection with Sikh history, pointing out that several Gurus had visited the sacred region during their spiritual journeys. He noted that Guru Tegh Bahadur left a lasting impression through his devotion and fearless commitment to dharma.

Historical Reflections and Community Engagement

The Prime Minister recalled how Kashmiri Hindus once sought Guru Tegh Bahadur’s protection against forced conversions under Mughal rule. He reiterated the Guru’s message that if he himself embraced Islam, his followers would do the same, a stand that ultimately cemented his place among history’s greatest defenders of religious freedom.

Governor Asim Kumar Ghosh, Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini and Haryana Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee President Jagdish Singh Jhinda were among those present.

Earlier in the day, PM Modi inaugurated the Panchjanya Memorial at Jyotisar, built in honour of Lord Krishna’s sacred conch. He also visited the Experience Centre and later offered prayers at Brahma Sarovar, a revered site associated with the revelation of the Bhagavad Gita.

His visit coincided with the International Gita Mahotsav, which will continue in Kurukshetra until December 5.

Reflecting on past events, the Prime Minister recalled being at Dera Baba Nanak during the opening of the Kartarpur Corridor on the same day the Supreme Court delivered its 2019 verdict clearing the path for the Ram Mandir’s construction, a moment he described as a remarkable convergence of faith and history.
