Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to arrive in Thrissur, central Kerala, on Wednesday to take part in a large-scale convention centred around women’s empowerment, which is being organised by the state branch of the Bharatiya Janata Party.
After arriving in Kochi in the afternoon from Lakshadweep, Modi is expected to hold a roadshow in the city, which is referred to as Kerala’s cultural capital.
PM Modi will later address two lakh women at the large Thekkinkadu maidan.
Party leaders say the purpose of the event, named ‘Sthree Shakthi Modikkoppam’ (Empowered Women with Modi), is to thank Modi for his successful passing of the Women’s Reservation Bill in both Houses of Parliament.
The convention is anticipated to bring together women from different backgrounds, including social and cultural activists, entrepreneurs, artists, ASHA workers, MGNREGA and neighbourhood network workers, and Anganwadi teachers.
As reported by PTI, the BJP state leadership recently said that a cross-section of women from Kerala would assemble in Thrissur as part of the programme.
Celebrities are expected to attend the event including singer Vaikom Vijayalakshmi, cricketer Minnu Mani, businesswoman Beena Kannan, actress-dancer Shobhana, and Mariyakutty, an elderly woman who has spoken out against red tape and corruption.
Although the program is intended to be a large-scale gathering of women, many view it as the official start of the BJP’s campaign for the upcoming general elections as the party looks to gain political support from Kerala, which is currently controlled by the Congress-led UDF and the CPI(M)-led LDF.
