On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi commenced his post-election activities with a series of meetings to address the impact of Cyclone Remal on several northeastern states and to review the current heatwave situation across the country. The initial meeting focused on the significant damage caused by the cyclone, highlighting the loss of human lives and the extensive destruction of homes and properties due to landslides and flooding.
Prime Minister Modi received a comprehensive briefing on the conditions in the affected states—Mizoram, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, and Tripura. The update included details on the fatalities and the damage to houses and properties resulting from the landslides and floods in these regions. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been actively involved in the relief operations, which include evacuations, airlifting stranded individuals, and clearing roads to reestablish connectivity.
During the briefing, it was noted that the Ministry of Home Affairs is maintaining regular communication with the state governments. Prime Minister Modi assured that the central government would continue to provide full support to the states impacted by Cyclone Remal. He directed the Home Ministry to keep a close watch on the situation and to conduct regular reviews to ensure necessary assistance for restoration efforts.

In a separate meeting, Prime Minister Modi assessed the ongoing heatwave conditions and the preparedness for the upcoming monsoon season. He was informed that the heatwave is expected to persist in parts of Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh, while the monsoon is anticipated to be normal to above normal in most parts of the country, with below-normal rainfall predicted for parts of Peninsular India.
The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of conducting regular drills to prevent and manage fire incidents. According to a release from the Prime Minister’s Office, Modi stressed the need for fire and electrical safety audits of hospitals and other public places. He also highlighted the necessity of regular maintenance drills for firelines in forests and the productive utilization of biomass.
