In a bid to tackle one of the most severe water crises in recent history, Delhi Water Minister Atishi has appealed to the Chief Ministers of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, Nayab Singh Saini and Yogi Adityanath respectively, for an urgent release of additional water to the national capital.
The request will span one month, providing crucial relief until the monsoon season begins.
Minister Atishi highlighted the unprecedented surge in water demand this year, driven by soaring temperatures that have reached nearly 50 degrees Celsius.
This extreme heat has strained Delhi’s water resources to their limits.
Atishi Urges Haryana & UP To Release Additional Water
Atishi in her letter to Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini wrote, “With temperatures touching almost 50 degrees Celsius, Delhi is stretched out to the maximum as far as its water resources are concerned. To tackle the existing crisis, we urgently need Haryana to release additional water into the Yamuna River at the earliest.”
She emphasized the dire situation by pointing out that the water level at the Wazirabad pond has dropped to 670.3 feet, significantly below the normal level of 674.50 feet.
This reduction has severely impacted the capacity of Delhi’s water treatment plants to produce adequate supplies.
Atishi stated, “This reduction in water level has adversely affected the water production capacity of our water treatment plants. However, to cater to the demands of people living in Delhi, we urgently need water in Yamuna to meet our day-to-day requirements.”
In her letter to UP CM Yogi Adityanath, Atishi underscored the critical need for support from neighboring states to mitigate the effects of the intense heatwave.
Atishi added, “Sir, through this letter, I wish to appeal to you to kindly consider our request and provide additional water to Delhi for the next month so that people living in Delhi can comfortably surpass this peak summer. The Delhi government and people living in the national capital will be anxiously waiting for a positive response.”
The letters underscore the urgent need for collaborative efforts to address the water scarcity affecting millions in Delhi.
