PM Modi To Launch ₹325-Crore Livestock Research Hub In Gujarat

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Bharat Bovine Breeding and Research Centre (BBBRC) in Bhildi, Banaskantha district, Gujarat, on October 30.

The ₹325-crore facility covers 127 acres and aims to produce 25,000 superior embryos every year to strengthen indigenous cattle breeds and boost milk output.

Banas Dairy established the centre with technical assistance from the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) and support through the Centre’s Rashtriya Gokul Mission.

The facility is one of five major Banas Dairy projects that PM Modi will inaugurate, dedicate to the public or launch through foundation stone ceremonies during his visit.

Reproductive Technologies to Improve Cattle Quality

Gujarat Assembly Speaker and Banas Dairy Chairman Shankar Chaudhary said the centre would deploy advanced methods, including ovum pick-up and in-vitro fertilisation (OPU-IVF), along with embryo transfer, to expand the breeding of high-quality cattle.

“Normally, a cow of a superior breed gives birth to only one calf in a year. However, with the help of this new technology, several calves can be obtained from an elite cow within a single year,” Chaudhary said.

The programme will cover indigenous cattle breeds such as Kankrej, Gir, Sahiwal and Tharparkar. It will also support buffalo breeds, including Mehsani, Banni, Jaffarabadi and Murrah.

The project promotes ‘fewer animals, but better-quality animals and more milk’ as livestock farmers contend with reduced fodder-growing areas and increasing rearing expenses.

Farmers will be able to access disease-free bulls from superior breeds, quality semen and embryos at affordable prices.

Better genetic traits could improve milk yields and fat content, helping farmers raise earnings and manage production costs.

Banas Dairy estimates that rural women account for 70 per cent of work in the dairy sector.

The centre will help small-scale livestock farmers, promote scientific breeding practices and improve the productivity and profitability of animal husbandry.
