PM Modi To Assess Progress Of High-Speed Rail Project At Surat Station

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will arrive in Gujarat on Saturday to inspect key developments in the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor (MAHSR), India’s pioneering bullet train initiative.

His visit will centre on the under-construction Surat Station, a pivotal component of the 508-km route set to transform long-distance rail travel in the country.

At approximately 10 AM, the Prime Minister will conduct a detailed review of the construction activities at the Surat Bullet Train Station.

Positioned strategically on the high-speed corridor, the station represents one of the most advanced sections of the project.

The MAHSR line traverses Gujarat, Maharashtra, and the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli. It connects major urban nodes, including Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Bharuch, Bilimora, Vapi, Thane, and Mumbai.

Of the 508 km stretch, 352 km lies within Gujarat and the adjoining Union Territory, while the remaining 156 km covers Maharashtra.

Significant Progress Along the Corridor

Project officials have reported steady advancement. Engineers have constructed an impressive 85 per cent of the track length—roughly 465 km—on elevated viaducts to improve safety and minimise land disturbance.

As of now, 326 km of viaduct stands completed, alongside 17 of the 25 planned river bridges.

The high-speed rail service will cut travel time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad to nearly two hours. This reduction will give a major boost to business mobility, tourism, and intercity connectivity.

Authorities believe the project will serve as a powerful economic driver, encouraging investment and expansion along the route.

The Surat–Bilimora segment, spanning around 47 km, ranks among the corridor’s most fully developed portions. Engineers have already finalised the civil structures and track-bed preparation.

The design of the Surat Station draws inspiration from the city’s renowned diamond industry, combining elegant architecture with commuter-friendly utilities.

Passengers can expect modern lounges and retail outlets. They will also have smooth connectivity to the Surat Metro, municipal bus networks, and conventional rail services.

Surat’s broader railway ecosystem is undergoing major upgrades under the Railway Station Redevelopment Programme. These developments reinforce the city’s position as a vital transit hub in western India.
