PM Modi Reaffirms ‘Act East, Act Fast’ Vision During Sikkim Statehood Golden Jubilee

On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the Sikkim@50 celebrations virtually, marking 50 years since Sikkim became the 22nd state of India in 1975.

Due to bad weather, PM Modi could not travel beyond Bagdogra and delivered his address virtually, expressing his disappointment at missing the chance to be physically present.

During the event, PM Modi inaugurated and laid foundation stones for multiple development projects.

These include a ₹750 crore, 500-bed district hospital in Namchi, a passenger ropeway at Sangachoeling in Gyalshing district, and a statue of Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee at Atal Amrit Udyan in Sangkhola, Gangtok.

He also unveiled a commemorative coin, a souvenir coin, and a postage stamp to mark the occasion.

Reflecting on Sikkim’s journey, PM Modi said the state chose a democratic path and integrated its unique identity with India.

“There was a belief that when every voice is heard and every right protected, equal opportunities will follow. Today, that belief is bearing fruit,” he stated.

The Prime Minister praised Sikkim for maintaining a balance between natural beauty and development, calling the state ‘a model of harmony where nature nurtures growth’.

He noted that the people of Sikkim have excelled in many fields, becoming shining examples of success on the national stage.

Act East With Act Fast

Reiterating his vision of inclusive development, PM Modi emphasised the importance of the North East in India’s growth story.

“Our ‘Act East’ policy is being implemented with an ‘Act fast’ approach,” the Prime Minister declared, reinforcing the Centre’s focus on developing the region’s infrastructure and economy.

PM Modi referred to the recent Rising North East Summit held in New Delhi, where several companies announced fresh investments in Sikkim, expected to boost employment and economic activity.

These announcements reflect the growing confidence of the business community in the state’s potential.

The day also marks Sikkim’s transition from a monarchy to a democratic Indian state, which occurred through a referendum on 16 May 1975.

The state’s integration into India was accompanied by Article 371F, ensuring the preservation of Sikkim’s unique customs, traditions, and ethnic identity.

Sikkim has earned national recognition for its sustainable development practices and eco-conscious governance.

Under the theme ‘Sunaulo, Samriddha and Samarth Sikkim’, the state plans a year-long celebration to showcase its achievements, cultural heritage, and future aspirations.

PM Modi’s virtual participation and his reaffirmation of the Act East, Act Fast vision signal a strong commitment to Sikkim’s continued growth and its integral role in India’s development journey.
