Elon Musk has announced that he is stepping down from his role as a senior advisor to US President Donald Trump, concluding his term as a Special Government Employee with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
The billionaire entrepreneur, who also leads Tesla and SpaceX, appointed to oversee efforts aimed at streamlining the federal bureaucracy and cutting down on wasteful government spending.
On Wednesday (US time), Musk took to the social media platform to express his gratitude for the chance to serve.
Taking to X, Musk posted, “As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President @realDonaldTrump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending.”
“The @DOGE mission will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government,” the post added.
Musk’s announcement followed shortly after he openly criticised the cornerstone of Trump’s legislative agenda.
In an interview with CBS, the Tesla CEO voiced his disappointment with what Trump refers to as his ‘big beautiful bill’, which combines extensive tax cuts with stricter immigration enforcement.
Musk described the legislation as a ‘massive spending bill’ that contradicts the objectives of his department.
“It increases the federal deficit and undermines the work of DOGE,” Musk asserted.
Taking a jab at the bill’s branding, Musk commented, “I think a bill can be big or it could be beautiful. But I don’t know if it could be both.”
Earlier on Wednesday, US President Donald Trump responded to Musk’s remarks during a brief encounter with reporters in the Oval Office.
While defending the bill, President Trump admitted to difficulties in reaching an agreement on it.
“I’m not happy about certain aspects of it, but I’m thrilled by other aspects of it,” he said, hinting that the bill could still undergo changes.
President Trump further added, “We’re going to see what happens. It’s got a way to go.”
