Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday inaugurated the centenary celebrations marking the landmark 1925 meeting between Sree Narayana Guru and Mahatma Gandhi—two moral giants who profoundly influenced India’s spiritual and social landscape.
Held at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi, the event paid tribute to their dialogue at Kerala’s Sivagiri Mutt, which focused on key social reforms including poverty eradication, religious harmony, and the abolition of untouchability.
In his address, PM Modi emphasised the enduring significance of the Guru–Gandhi meeting, calling it a “historic event that gave new direction to our independence movement and meaning to the dream of a free India.”

He described the occasion as a “source of inspiration for social harmony” and offered his respects to both Sree Narayana Guru and Mahatma Gandhi.
Teachings of equality & unity
PM Modi highlighted Sree Narayana Guru’s emphasis on equality, harmony, and service as timeless principles that still guide India’s development.
“For those who work to serve the nation and society, Guru Ji is like a lighthouse,” he said.
The Prime Minister noted that during colonial times, many feared challenging societal norms, but Sree Narayana Guru’s fearless advocacy for justice and human dignity helped lay the foundations for inclusive growth.
Reflecting on his own early experiences, PM Modi said, “I come from poverty, and when I make decisions for the betterment of the poor and oppressed, I remember Guru Ji.”
He stressed that the vision of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’ draws strength from such spiritual and moral guidance, and that those left behind in society remain the government’s top priority.
Organised by the Sree Narayana Dharma Sanghom Trust, the centenary event brought together spiritual leaders and social reformers from across India.
The celebration aimed not only to honour a century-old dialogue but also to reinforce its relevance in contemporary India, where the principles of equality, non-violence, and compassion continue to shape the national discourse.
PM Modi’s participation in the centenary event underlines the government’s broader vision of inclusive development rooted in India’s spiritual heritage.
As the country progresses towards its goals for a developed India (Viksit Bharat), the ideals of Sree Narayana Guru and Mahatma Gandhi remain central to the nation’s moral and developmental compass.
