PM Modi, HM Shah & Leaders Honour Syama Prasad Mookerjee On Martyrdom Day; Hails His Nationalist Legacy

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday paid heartfelt tributes to Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee, founder of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, on his death anniversary.

Remembering him as a visionary nationalist, PM Modi praised his ‘incomparable courage’ and ‘invaluable contribution’ to preserving the integrity of India.

Mookerjee, a towering figure in India’s early post-independence politics, played a central role in challenging Article 370 and championed the full integration of Jammu and Kashmir with the Indian Union.

He died in custody on 23 June 1953, following his arrest for entering Jammu and Kashmir without a permit, protesting the state’s special status.

Taking to social media, the Prime Minister wrote, “Tributes to Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee on his martyrdom day. He displayed incomparable courage and effort to keep the integrity of the country intact. His invaluable contribution to nation-building will always be remembered with reverence.”

PM Modi’s message echoed the sentiments of countless citizens and political leaders who continue to regard Mookerjee as a martyr who stood firm in defence of Indian unity.

Widespread political tributes

Union Home Minister Amit Shah paid a respectful tribute to Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee on a post on X,

“On the martyrdom day of Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, the pioneer of the country’s unity, integrity and cultural nationalism, I pay my respectful tribute to him. Dr. Mukherjee was the true architect of national unity. He never compromised with divisive elements in West Bengal and Jammu and Kashmir and resigned from the Nehru cabinet, sacrificing power,” HM Shah wrote.

BJP National President and Union Minister JP Nadda also honoured Mookerjee’s legacy, calling him the ‘blessed son of Mother India’ and the ‘pioneer of cultural nationalism’.

In his message, Nadda wrote, “Dr Shyama Prasad Ji struggled ideologically and politically throughout his life to keep Jammu and Kashmir and West Bengal an integral part of India.”

He added that Mookerjee’s vision gave rise to the Bharatiya Jana Sangh and laid the foundation for nationalist thought in Indian politics.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, in his tribute, stated, “He sacrificed everything for the unity and integrity of the country by renouncing power. His sacrifice will always be remembered.”

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also paid his respects, citing Mookerjee’s iconic slogan, “Nahi chalenge ek desh mein do Vidhan, do Pradhan aur do Nishan” (There will not be two constitutions, two prime ministers, and two flags in one country).

He also called Mookerjee a beacon of inspiration and a driving force for national integration.

Historical context & legacy

Mookerjee’s arrest in May 1953 and subsequent death in detention further led to widespread protests and a national awakening.

He also viewed Article 370 as divisive and criticised it as a form of ‘Balkanisation’.

His death further became a rallying point for political activists and eventually contributed to the dismantling of the permit system in Jammu and Kashmir.

Meanwhile, today, Syama Prasad Mookerjee’s life and ideals continue to inspire generations committed to the unity and sovereignty of India.

Leaders and citizens actively uphold his legacy through ongoing efforts to strengthen a united national identity.
