Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday affirmed that India’s knowledge tradition remains vibrant because it is built on four major pillars: preservation, innovation, addition, and adaptation.
He said this in New Delhi when launching the Gyan Bharatam Portal, a dedicated digital platform established to fast‑track manuscript digitisation, preservation, and public access.
The launch took place on the second day of the Gyan Bharatam International Conference, organised at Vigyan Bhawan under the theme ‘Reclaiming India’s Knowledge Legacy through Manuscript Heritage’.
PM Modi also attended an exhibition organised by the Ministry of Culture during the conference.
More Than an Event — A Proclamation of Culture
PM Modi emphasised that the conference is more than a government or academic event; it is ‘a proclamation of Indian culture, literature and consciousness’.
He congratulated all citizens on the launch of the Gyan Bharatam mission, noting that the endeavour will help digitise the insights and research of India’s great scholars and sages.
He said the Gyan Bharatam mission will digitise generations of scholarly insights, research, and India’s scientific heritage, and congratulated the nation on this initiative.
The Ministry of Culture describes Gyan Bharatam as a national movement that safeguards and shares India’s vast manuscript wealth.
The mission serves both as a tribute to the nation’s civilisational roots and as a forward‑looking step towards the Prime Minister’s vision of a Viksit Bharat by 2047, where India emerges as a true Vishwa Guru, blending the wisdom of its past with the innovation of its future.
The mission aims to revive India’s manuscript legacy through a comprehensive framework that blends preservation, digitisation, scholarship, and global accessibility.
Its objectives include the identification and documentation of texts through a nationwide register, the conservation and restoration of fragile manuscripts, large‑scale digitisation using AI‑driven tools, and the creation of a National Digital Repository.
Additionally, the mission focuses on research, translation, and publication of rare manuscripts; capacity building among scholars and conservators; development of digital platforms; public participation through collaborative programmes; global partnerships; and integrating manuscript wisdom into education, thereby strengthe ning India’s role in global knowledge exchange.
