PM Modi Hails Neeraj Chopra’s 90.23m Javelin Throw At Doha Diamond League

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday applauded India’s javelin sensation Neeraj Chopra for his historic performance at the Doha Diamond League 2025, where he became the first Indian to breach the 90-metre mark in the sport.

“A spectacular feat! Congratulations to Neeraj Chopra for breaching the 90 m mark at Doha Diamond League 2025 and achieving his personal best throw. This is the outcome of his relentless dedication, discipline and passion. India is elated and proud,” PM Modi wrote on X.

Neeraj, a two-time Olympic medallist, stunned spectators with a mammoth 90.23-metre throw in his third attempt, surpassing his previous national record of 89.94 metres set at the 2022 Stockholm Diamond League.

A Memorable Competition

Kicking off his 2025 season in Doha, Chopra opened with an impressive 88.44-metre throw, taking an early lead.

His second attempt was a foul, yet he retained the top spot ahead of Grenada’s Anderson Peters and Trinidad’s Keshorn Walcott.

It was his third attempt that stole the show- Neeraj launched the javelin to 90.23 metres, marking a historic milestone for Indian athletics and further extending his lead.

Germany’s Julian Weber, however, stayed in contention with a strong 89.06-metre throw.

Despite two fouls and an 80.56-metre throw in his fourth attempt, Neeraj held on to the lead in the final round.

In a dramatic conclusion, Julian Weber delivered a sensational 91.06-metre throw in the final round, narrowly edging out Chopra for the gold.

Neeraj’s last throw measured 88.20 metres, securing him second place. Peters rounded out the top three with a best of 85.64 metres.

While Chopra missed the top podium spot, his personal best and national record affirmed his elite status in the sport.

His milestone throw has energised the Indian athletics community and inspired countless aspiring athletes across the nation.

Consequently, in the wake of this remarkable achievement, PM Modi’s praise reflects the immense pride the country feels for Chopra’s accomplishment.

As India looks ahead to upcoming international competitions, Chopra’s consistent form and record-breaking performance at Doha signal strong prospects for more historic moments in the future.
