PM Modi & Greek PM Mitsotakis Reaffirm Strategic Partnership In Bilateral Call

Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a phone call from Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Friday, as both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the India-Greece Strategic Partnership.

The conversation reflected the growing depth of cooperation between the two countries across multiple sectors, including trade, technology, defence, and maritime affairs.

PM Mitsotakis began the call by warmly conveying his best wishes to Prime Minister Modi on the occasion of his birthday, a gesture that PM Modi appreciated with heartfelt gratitude.

One of the key highlights of the call was Greece’s renewed support for the early conclusion of a mutually beneficial India-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA).

PM Mitsotakis underlined the importance of strengthening economic engagement between India and the EU, a sentiment shared by PM Modi.

The leaders also discussed their shared interest in the success of the AI Impact Summit, which India is set to host in 2026. They acknowledged the importance of harnessing emerging technologies in a responsible and inclusive manner.

Expanding Cooperation

According to a statement released by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), both leaders welcomed positive developments in bilateral relations, spanning areas such as investment, shipping, defence, connectivity, security, and people-to-people exchanges.

They also agreed to maintain close contact and continue working together in these domains.

India and Greece have significantly strengthened their ties in recent years, especially after PM Modi visited Greece in August 2023 and both countries officially elevated their relationship to a Strategic Partnership.

They base this partnership on shared democratic values, respect for international law, and a mutual commitment to peace, security, and sustainable development.

Earlier in February 2024, PM Mitsotakis undertook a State Visit to India, the first of its kind by a Greek Head of Government in over 15 years.

The visit further solidified the growing partnership between the two nations. During their meetings, both leaders emphasised their shared belief in democracy, the rule of law, and human rights.

The leaders also discussed the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC), highlighting its potential to improve trade, infrastructure, and energy cooperation between India and Europe.

They reiterated the importance of building sustainable connectivity through regional collaboration, particularly in sectors such as logistics, ports, and commerce.

With this renewed diplomatic engagement, India and Greece continue to align their strategic goals and global outlook.

The phone call underscores both nations’ desire to work closely in shaping a secure, rules-based international order while boosting mutual prosperity.
