Prime Minister Narendra Modi
A day ahead of the interim Budget 2024, on Wednesday, PM Modi addressed the media and also slammed the “unruly MPs” and urged them to introspect as the Budget Session of Parliament got underway. Referring to the bill enacted by the new Parliament regarding women’s reservations, PM Modi said, “On January 26 too, we saw a display of women empowerment. Today, President Droupadi Murmu will address the session and tomorrow Nirmala Sitharaman ji will present the interim Budget. This is a festival of Nari shakti.”
In his speech, Prime Minister Modi also made remarks on Members of Parliament for allegedly interfering with legislative business, saying, “In the last 10 years, MPs did what suited them in Parliament. But I must say that those who are ‘habitual offenders’, those who have the habit of doing ‘cheerharan’ of democracy should introspect at the last session. They can even ask the people of their constituency whether the people remember them for that.”
According to PM Modi, people who oppose just for the sake of opposing are forgotten, in contrast to those who criticize with the fiercest language yet make real, constructive contributions to the discussion. “This is also an opportunity for regret. I will urge my fellow parliamentarians to not let go this session,” PM Modi said.
During his speech, Prime Minister Modi mentioned that it is customary to provide an interim budget before an election. “We will present the full budget after we form the government after the election,” PM Modi said
Thirty minutes after the President’s speech, the Houses will begin to convene. A copy of the President’s speech will be placed on the table of each House by the Secretary Generals of the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha.
146 opposition MPs were suspended between December 17 and December 19, an unparalleled amount of suspensions during the previous parliament. One day prior to the session, the suspension of fourteen MPs was lifted. The 14 suspended members of parliament are: K Jayakumar and Abdul Khaleque of the Congress; Vijay Kumar of the Janata Dal (United) from the Lok Sabha; Jebi Mather, L Hanumanthaiah, Neeraj Dangi, Rajmani Patel, Kumar Ketkar, and GC Chandrasekhar from the Congress; Binoy Viswam and Sandosh Kumar of the Communist Party of India; Mohamad Abdulla from Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam; and John Brittas and AA Rahim of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) from the Rajya Sabha.
