Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked National Sports Day with heartfelt greetings to athletes nationwide and reaffirmed the government’s ongoing commitment to fostering sports and enhancing youth engagement in the field.
Observed annually on 29 August, National Sports Day coincides with the birth anniversary of India’s hockey legend, Major Dhyan Chand.
In a message posted on X, PM Modi honored the legendary player and extended his compliments to all sportspersons who have represented India with dedication and passion.
PM Modi conveyed, “Greetings on National Sports Day. Today we pay homage to Major Dhyan Chand Ji. It is an occasion to compliment all those passionate about sports and those who have played for India.”
The Prime Minister emphasized the government’s role in sports development, affirming its commitment to supporting sports and providing more opportunities for youth to participate and excel.

In a video shared on social media, PM Modi discussed the integral role of sports in fostering global unity and personal well-being.
PM Modi stated that sports have long been a part of India’s culture and heritage. He emphasized that sports are not just about winning medals but also about winning hearts and being inclusive. PM Modi further highlighted that sports prepare champions, promote peace, progress, and wellness, and serve as a way to unite the world.
PM Modi Pledges To Make 2036 Olympics A Success; Calls It A National Dream
Meanwhile, highlighting the upcoming 2036 Olympics, which will be hosted by India, PM Modi expressed his determination to ensure its success, describing it as a collective aspiration of the nation.
“This is a dream of 140 crore Indians,” PM Modi further asserted.
Reflecting on the growing enthusiasm for sports among the youth, the Prime Minister noted, “Today, the attraction towards sports we are seeing in youth, this is the biggest tribute to Major Dhyan Chand.”
