PM Modi Bids Farewell To Retiring Rajya Sabha Members

PM Narendra Modi on Wednesday bid farewell to Members of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha who are set to retire after completing their terms, acknowledging their role in strengthening parliamentary democracy.

The Upper House witnessed a farewell session as members gathered to honour colleagues retiring between April and July.

A total of 37 MPs from 10 states will conclude their tenure in the coming months.

Addressing the House, the Prime Minister reflected on shared experiences, noting that while debates may differ, respect for colleagues remains constant. He said some retiring members may return, while others will continue serving the public in different capacities.

PM Modi highlighted the contributions of senior leaders such as HD Deve Gowda, Mallikarjun Kharge, and Sharad Pawar, praising their decades-long commitment to parliamentary life. He urged new members to learn from their dedication and experience, calling their long service highly significant.

PM Narendra Modi praised Harivansh Narayan Singh for his role in running the House and lauded Ramdas Athawale for his humour, saying he will continue to bring cheer to public life. He said the Rajya Sabha benefits from a steady exchange of experience as new members learn from seasoned leaders, ensuring continuity in parliamentary traditions.

The Prime Minister added that the six-year tenure allows members to contribute to national service while gaining valuable experience that continues to benefit society.

Recent biennial elections strengthened the NDA’s position in the House, as the alliance won key seats in Bihar and Odisha, while several members secured election unopposed.

The Prime Minister concluded by extending his best wishes to all retiring members and appreciating their lasting contribution to national life.
