PM Modi Announces Rs 2 Lakh Ex-Gratia For Karur Stampede Victims

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced financial assistance for the victims of the tragic stampede at a political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, where at least 39 people, including children and women, lost their lives, and dozens sustained injuries.

The Prime Minister approved an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund for the next of kin of each deceased individual.

Those injured in the stampede will receive Rs 50,000 each to support their medical treatment and recovery.

A statement from the PMO said, “PM @narendramodi has announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF to be given to the next of kin of each deceased in the unfortunate incident at a political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000.

The Incident

The accident occurred on Saturday evening at Velusamypuram in Karur district during a campaign rally addressed by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president and actor Vijay.

Thousands of supporters had gathered from across the region, resulting in overcrowding in narrow lanes near the venue.

As the rally concluded, a sudden rush and confusion led to a deadly crush. Tamil Nadu’s Director General of Police G Venkataraman confirmed 39 fatalities, including nine children, while over 80 people injured and admitted to various hospitals.

Many attendees had waited for hours under the hot sun without adequate food or water, following social media posts indicating Vijay would arrive earlier.

The meeting commenced later in the evening, exacerbating the situation.

Vijay expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, describing it as an ‘irreparable loss’, and announced Rs 20 lakh compensation for each bereaved family and Rs 2 lakh for the injured.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin visited Karur to meet the affected families and the injured.

The state government announced Rs 10 lakh compensation for each deceased and Rs 1 lakh for those injured.

CM Stalin also ordered a judicial inquiry led by retired High Court judge Justice Aruna Jagadeesan to examine lapses that contributed to the disaster.

Coordinated Relief Efforts

With support coming from the Prime Minister, the Tamil Nadu government, and the rally organiser, relief measures are being intensified to aid affected families.

Authorities are ensuring timely medical care, financial support, and proper assistance to help victims and their families recover from the tragedy.

The coordinated response underscores the commitment of both central and state authorities to manage the aftermath of such disasters and provide comprehensive relief to those impacted.
