Prime Minister Narendra Modi called on citizens to embrace ‘Swadeshi’ this Gandhi Jayanti and express pride in traditional crafts.
He emphasised the importance of Khadi, noting that the fabric once faced declining popularity but has witnessed a significant revival in the past 11 years.
PM Modi urged everyone to purchase at least one Khadi product on October 2, encouraging citizens to share their support on social media using the hashtag ‘Vocal for Local’.
He stressed that Khadi, along with handloom and handicrafts, represents India’s rich cultural heritage and offers economic opportunities.
Highlighting successful local initiatives, the Prime Minister cited Yaazh Naturals in Tamil Nadu.
Entrepreneurs Ashok Jagdishan and Prem Selvaraj left corporate careers to produce yoga mats from grass and banana fibre, use herbal dyes for textiles, and provide employment to 200 families through training programs.
He also mentioned Ashish Satyavrat Sahu from Jharkhand, who has popularised tribal weaving and garments globally through the Johargram brand, bringing international recognition to Jharkhand’s cultural heritage.
From Bihar, PM Modi highlighted Sweety Kumari of Madhubani district, who transformed Mithila painting into a sustainable livelihood for women. Over 500 rural women now benefit from her initiative, contributing to self-reliance and local economic development.
The Prime Minister emphasised that India’s traditional crafts hold immense potential when combined with modern innovation.
He stated that these success stories demonstrate that traditions can generate income and empower communities. With determination, he added, success is achievable in every sphere.
By encouraging the adoption of Khadi and Swadeshi products, PM Modi aims to strengthen local economies, empower artisans, and preserve India’s cultural heritage.
His call reinforces the broader ‘Vocal for Local’ initiative, ensuring that traditional crafts and handloom industries thrive while offering new employment opportunities.
PM Modi’s message serves as both a reminder of Gandhiji’s vision and a contemporary call to action for citizens to support local products, embrace India’s traditional crafts, and foster sustainable economic growth.
