PM Modi, Amit Shah Extend Warm Wishes As Karnataka Marks 70th Kannada Rajyotsava

As Karnataka observes 70 years of Kannada Rajyotsava, Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his heartfelt wishes to the people of the state. He praised Karnataka as a land where ancient wisdom meets modern progress, commending its people for their creativity, hard work, and the inspiration they bring to the entire nation.

Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “Today, when we mark Kannada Rajyotsava, we celebrate the spirit of excellence and industrious nature that the people of Karnataka are synonymous with. We also celebrate the outstanding culture of Karnataka, reflected in its literature, art, music and more. The state embodies the spirit of progress rooted in wisdom. I pray that people of the state are happy and healthy.”

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also shared his greetings on X.

“Warm wishes to the sisters and brothers of Karnataka on their Rajyotsava! Home to a rich legacy of art, innovation and learning, the people of Karnataka have made invaluable contributions to our culture and nation’s growth. May the state flourish with prosperity and glory,” he posted.

Formation of Karnataka and Its Historical Journey

Karnataka was officially formed on 1 November 1956, when various Kannada-speaking regions across southern India were brought together under the States Reorganisation Act, creating a unified Mysuru State.

The region, historically known as Karnataka, had previously been divided into over twenty administrative areas, including princely states and territories under the Madras and Bombay Presidencies, as well as the Nizam’s Hyderabad.

The renaming of Mysuru State to Karnataka took place on 1 November 1973, marking a new era of unity and linguistic pride. Since then, people have celebrated Kannada Rajyotsava every year with enthusiasm and patriotic spirit.

The movement for a unified Karnataka dates back to the late 19th century, when RH Deshpande founded the Karnataka Vidyavardhaka Sangha in Dharwad in 1890.

Historical records show that in 1912, the organisation passed a resolution advocating for the merger of all Kannada-speaking areas under British rule.

The 70th Kannada Rajyotsava not only commemorates the creation of the state but also pays tribute to the visionaries and unsung heroes who helped shape Karnataka’s identity.

Their efforts—from freedom struggles to social reform and scientific advancement—reflect the state’s enduring blend of tradition and progress.

Kannadigas around the world celebrate Kannada Rajyotsava, a public holiday in Karnataka.

The day features flag-hoisting ceremonies, addresses by the Chief Minister and Governor, cultural performances, book launches, and the presentation of Rajyotsava Awards to honour distinguished citizens.

Recognising Karnataka’s Icons and Contributors

Among those recognised for their lasting impact is Sulebhavi Narayanamma, a trailblazing social reformer who championed women’s empowerment and rural education in North Karnataka. Her efforts laid the groundwork for gender equality and literacy in the region.

Also remembered is HS Doreswamy, a veteran freedom fighter and Gandhian activist whose lifelong commitment to justice and civic responsibility made him a respected moral voice in Karnataka.

In science, Dr CNR Rao, a Bharat Ratna recipient and renowned chemist, has brought global acclaim to the state through his pioneering work in materials science, positioning Bengaluru as a world centre for research and innovation.

Similarly, Dr K Kasturirangan, former ISRO Chairman, has been instrumental in advancing India’s space exploration and shaping the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, a reflection of Karnataka’s intellectual leadership.

Karnataka’s vibrant cultural legacy continues through Dr Chandrashekhara Kambara, the Jnanpith Award-winning poet and playwright whose work celebrates rural life and the Kannada spirit.

As Vice-Chancellor of Kannada University, Hampi, he helped nurture the state’s artistic and literary traditions.

Equally inspiring is Dr H Sudarshan, a public health expert and tribal rights advocate whose work in remote areas has transformed healthcare access for marginalised communities, embodying Karnataka’s deep-rooted commitment to compassion and social welfare.
