On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate India’s first digital museum dedicated to tribal freedom fighters on Saturday in Chhattisgarh. The Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh Memorial and Tribal Freedom Fighters Museum will open on the same day the state celebrates its 25th Foundation Day.
Alongside the inauguration, several development schemes worth over Rs 14,260 crore will be launched, underlining a major push towards both heritage conservation and economic progress.
PM Modi will also reveal a statue of former Prime Minister and Bharat Ratna awardee Atal Bihari Vajpayee at the newly established state assembly complex.
The new museum reflects the Centre’s effort to blend cultural remembrance with technological innovation, placing tribal history in a modern, digital format.
Spread over ten acres and built at a cost of Rs 50 crore, the museum commemorates Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh, the Sonakhan landlord hailed as Chhattisgarh’s first martyr for leading a revolt against British rule.
It aims to serve as a permanent reminder of the courage and resilience shown by tribal communities during India’s freedom struggle.
Exhibits document a series of key uprisings, including the Halba Rebellion, Sarguja Revolt, and the movements of Bhopalpatnam, Paralkot, Tarapur, Lingagiri, Koie, Meria, Muria, Rani Chauris, Bhumkal, and Sonakhan, as well as the Jhanda and Jungle Satyagrahas.
Visitors can follow these movements through immersive displays that connect local resistance with the broader independence movement.
At the museum’s entrance, wood carvings created by Sarguja artisans are displayed alongside replicas of Sal, Mahua, and Saja trees.
Each digital leaf tells the story of a historic uprising, fusing craftsmanship with cutting-edge digital design.
As India’s first fully digital tribal museum, it houses sixteen interactive galleries that showcase the bravery of tribal leaders through a mix of digital art, installations, and local craftsmanship.
Artists from Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and Kolkata have contributed to the project, creating a striking visual narrative of the tribal struggle.
A standout feature is the AI-based experience where visitors can see themselves dressed in traditional tribal attire.
Using advanced imaging, the display transforms each person’s reflection into a part of tribal life, surrounded by forests and cultural motifs.
Other attractions include selfie points, sculptures of tribal icons such as Bhagwan Birsa Munda and Shaheed Gend Singh, as well as accessible facilities for elderly and differently-abled visitors.
Calling the new establishment a ‘world centre for tribal culture’, Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai said it represents a pledge to keep the stories of tribal heroes alive.
“It should be our collective responsibility to ensure that future generations remain aware of their heritage. Preserving the struggles and contributions of our tribal communities is not just an act of remembrance — it’s a commitment to their enduring spirit,” he further stated.
