On Wednesday, a former official filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Calcutta High Court, urging the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to investigate alleged financial misconduct at RG Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata during Sandip Ghosh’s tenure as principal.
The Division Bench, comprising Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam and Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharyya, accepted the petition filed by Akhtar Ali, a former Deputy Medical Superintendent of RG Kar Medical College.
This development gains significance in light of the West Bengal government’s recent announcement to form a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by senior Indian Police Service officers, including an Inspector General, to investigate the allegations against the hospital under Ghosh’s administration.
Additionally, on Wednesday, Ali filed a separate petition before the single-judge Bench of Justice Rajarshi Bharadwaj, requesting protection due to anticipated threats arising from his whistleblowing against Ghosh. Justice Bharadwaj agreed to hear the petition.
Ali has previously stated that he alerted the state Health Department about the financial irregularities at the hospital two years ago, but no action was taken.
This lack of response, according to Ali, prompted him to seek a central agency investigation through the Calcutta High Court.
Opposition parties have criticized the formation of the SIT by the state government, labeling it as a superficial measure designed to obscure rather than uncover the truth.
They allege that the SIT’s purpose is to tamper with evidence rather than conduct a genuine inquiry.
Meanwhile, Sandip Ghosh is currently on leave following a directive from the Calcutta High Court, which instructed the state Health Department not to assign him to any medical college leadership roles until further notice.
