On Wednesday, medical professionals, including doctors and students, took to the streets of Salt Lake to demand justice for the female doctor from RG Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata, who allegedly faced rape and murder at the facility.
The protest march began at the Central Government Office (CGO) complex and was likely to conclude at Swasthya Bhavan, the headquarters of the state health department.
The choice of the CGO complex as the starting point was deliberate, as it houses the office of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is leading the investigation into the case.
A protester explained, “We chose to start from the CGO complex to send a message to the CBI. It has been a week since the investigation began, and we have yet to see significant progress. This rally is a call for action.”
During the protest, former RG Kar principal Sandip Ghosh, who is currently under interrogation by the CBI, was present within the CGO complex.
In response to the rally, both the CGO complex and Swasthya Bhavan were heavily guarded, with a strong police presence ensuring the safety of the marchers.
The protesters, who marched peacefully while chanting slogans such as “We want Justice” and “Justice for RG Kar victim,” carried signs demanding a swift investigation and severe punishment for those responsible.
Upon reaching Swasthya Bhavan, a delegation from the protest group planned to meet with senior officials from the state Health Department to deliver a memorandum outlining their demands for justice and an expedited probe.
The post-mortem report of the victim revealed 14 injuries on her body.
