Chhattisgarh Police Headquarters has sought an official explanation from Rajnandgaon Superintendent of Police (SP) Ankita Sharma after a video allegedly showing her firing an AK-47 rifle during Dussehra celebrations went viral on social media, raising questions about safety protocols and police conduct.
The incident reportedly took place during the traditional arms worship ceremony organised at the police lines on Vijayadashami.
Sharma, a prominent woman Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, participated in the ceremony, which is held annually as part of Dussehra celebrations.
According to reports, after the rituals concluded, Sharma allegedly fired shots into the air using an AK-47 rifle while wearing a saree.
Someone recorded the incident, and the footage subsequently circulated widely on social media, triggering public debate over the conduct of senior police officers and adherence to firearm safety standards.
The controversy prompted the Chhattisgarh Police Headquarters (PHQ) to seek a formal explanation from the officer through the Inspector General of Police (IG) concerned.
Rajnandgaon Range IG Ajay Yadav confirmed the PHQ notice and said he would forward Sharma’s reply to senior officials, who will decide on further action under the rules.
The incident has drawn attention to the responsibilities of senior police officials during public ceremonies, particularly when handling firearms. While arms worship is a traditional feature of Vijayadashami celebrations in police establishments, the video has prompted scrutiny of the circumstances surrounding the alleged firing.
The matter remains under consideration, with attention now focused on Sharma’s response to the notice and the subsequent decision by the police headquarters.
