PM Modi calls for stronger global cooperation and greater representation for developing nations at the NDTV World Summit.

NDTV World Summit: PM Modi Says Global Institutions Have Failed To Keep Pace With Change

On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged countries to build an international system that prioritises humanity and ensures cooperation during periods of crisis, while giving developing nations a stronger voice in global decision-making.

Key Takeaways

Speaking at the NDTV World Summit in New Delhi, PM Modi recalled how the COVID-19 pandemic exposed divisions between countries, with national interests often taking precedence over collective action. He said the experience prompted him to propose a global framework focused on the shared well-being of humanity at the G20 in 2020.

The Prime Minister stressed that international institutions need reform and that collaboration must extend beyond periods of stability.

Citing the ancient concept of Matsya Nyaya, in which the powerful dominate the weaker, PM Modi called for a global system that prevents such inequalities.

The Prime Minister highlighted India’s contribution during the pandemic, when it supplied medicines and vaccines to more than 100 countries. He said the country sought to act as a dependable international partner rather than pursue its interests alone.

PM Modi pointed to India’s leadership of the G20 and BRICS, where declarations were adopted through consensus despite differences among participating nations, describing this as evidence of India’s capacity to bring countries together.

According to PM Modi, the country’s ambition to become a developed nation, or Viksit Bharat, also has wider international significance. Greater economic strength and self-reliance, he said, could reinforce global supply chains and contribute to innovation and productivity.

The Prime Minister noted India’s progress in renewable energy, digital payments, artificial intelligence and startups, alongside developments in nuclear technology, digital census preparations and hydrogen-powered rail transport.

PM Modi said India’s continued economic growth and technological advancement could contribute to greater global stability and shared prosperity.
