A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court demanding the restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. College teacher Zahoor Ahmed Bhatt and activist Khurshid Ahmed Malik submitted the petition. They urged the court to direct the central government to restore statehood within two months.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the central government, had previously assured the Supreme Court that Jammu and Kashmir’s full statehood would be restored. The government stated that the decision to make it a Union Territory was temporary.
However, even 11 months after the Supreme Court’s ruling on Article 370, no steps have been taken toward restoring statehood. The central government maintains that statehood will be restored when the situation in Jammu and Kashmir normalizes.
