The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed its first chargesheet in the case of the rape and murder of a female trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College. The chargesheet, submitted to the Sealdah Court, names Sanjoy Roy, a civil volunteer, as the accused. The 200-page document contains statements from 200 witnesses and outlines the charges of rape and murder.
According to the CBI, the incident occurred on August 9 when the victim, who had taken leave, was about to sleep in the seminar room of the hospital. The CBI alleges that Roy raped and murdered her that night. The young doctor’s body was found in the hospital premises the next morning, revealing signs of extreme brutality. The chargesheet, however, notes that the investigation is still ongoing to determine if there were other suspects involved.
Amid nationwide protests following the horrific incident, the Calcutta High Court transferred the case to the CBI. The case later reached the Supreme Court. During the last Supreme Court hearing, the Solicitor General (SG), representing the CBI, informed the court about the latest evidence obtained. This included CCTV footage from Tala Police Station and forensic analysis of mobile phones belonging to former RG Kar Medical College principal, Sandeep Ghosh, and ex-Tala police station in-charge, Abhijit Mandal.
Based on this evidence, both Ghosh and Mandal were questioned as part of the investigation. The Chief Justice of India (CJI) acknowledged seeing the CBI’s report and noted that significant clues had been found. As a result, the Supreme Court has allowed the CBI to continue its investigation into the case.
