Big Change In Parliament Security After Breach

The Indian government has announced a significant security measure for the Parliament complex following a recent breach. The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) will replace the Delhi Police, taking charge of access and frisking responsibilities. The Lok Sabha Secretariat will oversee security within the complex, while Delhi Police will maintain control over the outer perimeter.

This change, aimed at streamlining security protocols, comes after a detailed security survey ordered by the Home Ministry in response to the breach on December 13. During that incident, two individuals gained access to the Lok Sabha’s visitor gallery, creating a security scare by releasing smoke canisters. The breach prompted tightened entry protocols, with separate gates assigned for MPs, staff, and press.

The CISF, known for providing integrated security to sensitive public sector undertakings, will now extend its coverage to the Parliament complex. The force currently safeguards over 350 locations, including airports and nuclear facilities.

In light of the breach, the government plans to enhance security measures further. The visitors’ gallery will be enclosed in glass to prevent unauthorized entry into the House chamber, and body scan machines, akin to those at airports, will be installed. These measures underscore the government’s commitment to fortifying security in the wake of the recent incident, which has fueled a political standoff, resulting in the suspension of 143 opposition MPs from the current parliamentary session.
