For the first time in Jammu and Kashmir’s recruitment history, more than 5.59 lakh aspirants are gearing up to compete for 4,002 constable posts in the union territory. The written examination, conducted by the Services Selection Recruitment Board (SSRB), begins Sunday, December 1, and will be held on three dates December 1, 8, and 22—across 856 centers in all 20 districts of J&K.
Lt Governor Ensures Transparency
Lt Governor Manoj Sinha chaired a high-level meeting on Saturday to oversee preparations and ensure a hassle-free, transparent, and fair selection process. “This recruitment drive is a significant step in strengthening the police force and creating opportunities for the youth of J&K,” he emphasized.
A Record Number Of Candidates
SSRB Chairperson Indu Kanwal Chib confirmed that a staggering 5.59 lakh candidates have registered for the exams.
- On December 1, 2,62,863 candidates will appear for the constable (Executive/Armed/SDRF) exam, with Jammu district recording the highest number of applicants at 54,296.
- On December 8, 1,67,609 candidates will take the constable (Telecommunications) test.
- On December 22, 1,28,663 candidates will compete for constable (Photographer) posts.
Stringent Security And Monitoring Measures
To ensure fairness, male and female officers have been deployed as frisking supervisors, and the entire examination process will be videographed. J&K Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo has ordered the deployment of adequate staff, including observers and security personnel, at all centers to facilitate smooth and secure operations.
Sub-Inspector Recruitment To Follow
Following the constable exams, SSRB will initiate the recruitment process for 669 sub-inspector posts starting December 3. Applications for these posts will remain open until January 2, 2025.
Learning From Past Controversies
The current recruitment efforts follow a 2022 scandal in which allegations of paper leaks tainted the sub-inspector recruitment process. A CBI probe uncovered that a network of 24 individuals, including a BSF officer, sold test papers for Rs 20-30 lakhs. The J&K government subsequently canceled the selection process, filed charges against the accused, and overhauled the SSRB by replacing board members and staff linked to the scandal.
