A group of Opposition Members of Parliament has written to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, calling for a special discussion on the ongoing voter list revision in Bihar and other states, citing serious concerns over its timing and transparency.
In a joint letter, Opposition leaders raised alarm over the voter list revision taking place just months ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections.
The letter noted, “We, the undersigned Members of Parliament representing various Opposition parties, wish to express our serious apprehension about the ongoing voter list revision in Bihar, particularly its timing so close to the state elections. Such a move is unprecedented and raises troubling questions.”
They also pointed to the Election Commission of India’s indication that similar revisions might take place in other regions soon, prompting fears of a broader national pattern.
“Given the widespread concerns regarding transparency, timing, and the broader intent behind this process, we believe the matter merits the urgent attention of the House,” the MPs asserted.
The letter reminded the Speaker that the matter had been flagged repeatedly during the current session and brought up during the All-Party Meeting on 20 July.
The MPs noted that the government had reportedly agreed to a general discussion on various issues but had not set a specific date to address the voter roll revision.
Arguing that any changes to the electoral rolls directly impact the right to vote and the fairness of elections, the MPs stressed the importance of parliamentary scrutiny.
“A special discussion in the Lok Sabha will provide members an opportunity to seek clarity, raise legitimate concerns, and push for greater transparency and accountability in the process,” the letter emphasised.
Concluding their remarks, the MPs demanded swift intervention, noting, “We therefore request you to schedule a special discussion on the ongoing voter roll revision without any further delay.”
Several prominent Opposition leaders, including Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, Lalji Verma, Supriya Sule, and Abhay Kumar Sinha, signed the appeal.
