Clearing the way for the formation of independent government in Jammu and Kashmir, President of India Droupadi Murmu has revoked the President rule from the state, after National Conference and Congress secured comfortable majority in recently concluded polls.
The Union Home Ministry issued a gazette notification confirming the decision. It states, “In exercise of the powers conferred by Section 73 of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, the order dated October 31, 2019, regarding the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir shall stand revoked immediately.”
This announcement of comes after National Conference (NC) Vice-President Omar Abdullah met with Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Friday to stake a claim to form a new government. The Assembly elections were the first held in a decade, resulting in a significant victory for the NC-Congress alliance, which secured 48 out of 90 seats. While the NC played a key role in this success, the Congress managed to win only six seats.

The NC-Congress alliance is now poised to form the government, with Omar Abdullah elected as the leader of the alliance and set to become the next Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir.
President’s Rule had been imposed on October 31, 2019, following the bifurcation of the former state into two Union Territories: Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh. This change occurred alongside the abrogation of Article 370, which granted special status to the state.
Prior to the imposition of President’s Rule, Central rule had been in place since June 2017, following the resignation of Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti after the BJP withdrew support from the PDP-led government.
