The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken action following reports of police excesses during the ‘Nabanna Abhijan’ protest on 27 August, which was organized to denounce the rape and murder of a junior doctor from RG Kar Medical College & Hospital.
The NHRC issued a notice to Kolkata Police, demanding an explanation of their conduct during the demonstration.
The commission has requested a detailed report from the Kolkata Police within 14 days.
Meanwhile, the NHRC views the police response to the protest as a potential human rights violation.
A student group mobilized the protest via social media, and demonstrators marched towards the Bengal secretariat to express their outrage over the recent crime.
In a related development, Sayan Lahiri, a key organizer of the march detained by police, has petitioned the Calcutta High Court for his release.
Lahiri’s legal team alleges that his arrest was based on false charges.
The High Court has admitted the petition, with proceedings likely to resume later on Friday.
The 27 August protest turned chaotic, with clashes erupting between police and demonstrators across West Bengal and Howrah.
Authorities responded with lathi charges, tear gas, and water cannons to control the situation.
The violence resulted in injuries to both protesters and police personnel and led to 220 arrests, including 25 preventive detentions made before the march commenced.
Kolkata Police defended their actions, asserting that the preventive measures were crucial in managing what could have otherwise escalated into a more severe confrontation.
