Negotiation is a very important skill for responsible people who have a daily dealing with people. Same is the case with police officers as well for whom handling one or the other conflict is a regular activity during their service daily. Sometimes they have to solve the conflicts of other people, and sometimes they have to find a way to solve the conflicts with the people who are bent upon disturbing the law and order situation.

Keeping this in view, the Police Training and Research Institute (PTRI) and Madhya Pradesh Police Academy, Bhopal, working under the Madhya Pradesh Police Department, organized a training session on the subject of Negotiation with the aim of improving and strengthening the skills of the police officers.

This session was a part of their training program for sub-inspectors. Naveen Krishna Rai, Manager, Government Affairs, IIM Indore addressed the sessions.

The officers were exposed to important aspects of Negotiation and Conflict Management in the session. Rai emphasized the need to improve negotiation skills by saying, ”People don’t always get what they deserve, they get as much as they can negotiate”. Rai talked about the different styles, stages and strategies of negotiation.

Talking in detail about the various stages of negotiation, he told the participants that while preparing for any negotiation, one should think and understand that in case of failure of that negotiation, what is the second best option available to them. (Best Alternative To A Negotiated Agreement, BATNA) and should not accept any offer less than that option.

Finally, Rai concluded the session by explaining negotiation strategies with the help of the “dual concern model”.
