Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former Madhya Pradesh Home Minister, Narottam Mishra, has praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visionary leadership for transforming Datia from a region once known for jungles and dacoits into a growing hub of development.
Speaking on Saturday, Mishra highlighted how residents of Datia, located in the Chambal region, no longer need to travel to Jhansi to board a train thanks, he said, to the central government’s focused infrastructure initiatives.
Datia To Receive Flights, Not Just Send Passengers
In a significant reversal of roles, Mishra remarked that the time has come when travellers from Jhansi and neighbouring districts will instead journey to Datia to catch flights.
This marks a dramatic shift for the town, which was once overlooked in terms of connectivity.
Mishra made these comments ahead of Prime Minister Modi’s virtual inauguration of the newly constructed Datia Airport, scheduled to take place during the PM’s visit to Bhopal on 31 May.
A Personal Mission Realised
Having represented the Datia Assembly seat multiple times, Mishra recounted his long-standing efforts to secure clearance for the airport project.
He said the new airport would significantly boost tourism, especially visits to the revered Maa Pitambara temple.
“Those were the days when people from Datia had to go to Jhansi to catch a train. Now, people from Jhansi will come to Datia to board a flight.

This transformation was only possible under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” Mishra asserted.
Mishra also underlined broader progress across the region, particularly in the Madhya Pradesh part of Bundelkhand.
He credited PM Modi for delivering several critical projects, including the Bundelkhand Expressway and the Ken-Betwa River Linking Project.
“No matter how much we thank him, it won’t be enough,” he added.
Airport Specifications And Significance
The newly built Datia Airport covers approximately 118 acres and includes a 1,810-metre-long and 30-metre-wide runway.
Its terminal building spans 768 square metres and is designed to handle up to 100 passengers per hour.
According to a senior official at Bhopal’s Raja Bhoj Airport, the facility is classified under the 3C/VFR category, allowing regional aircraft to operate under visual flight conditions.
The airport also meets current aviation standards in terms of passenger processing and security infrastructure.
Strengthening Madhya Pradesh’s Air Network
With the addition of Datia, Madhya Pradesh now boasts nine public airports, including those in Bhopal, Indore, Jabalpur, Khajuraho and Gwalior.
Officials believe the establishment of this airport represents a major step forward in enhancing regional air connectivity.
The Datia Airport is expected to catalyse both economic and religious tourism in the area, opening up new avenues for growth across the Bundelkhand region.
