Swami Yoganand has garnered significant recognition in the spiritual realm today, primarily due to his book ‘Autobiography of a Yogi.’ This book mentions numerous miraculous saints of India, one of whom is Mahavatar Babaji.
When Rajnikanth visited Mahavatar Babaji’s cave for meditation, the discussions surrounding Babaji once again intensified. It is believed that Babaji is around 2800 years old and still maintains an eternally youthful appearance. To date, only a handful of individuals have had the privilege of meeting Mahavatar Babaji, who resides in the Himalayas. Those who have encountered him claim that Babaji continues to meditate in a Himalayan cave.
During his meditation, Babaji is said to travel the entire world, possessing a supernatural state of meditation. His level of spirituality is so advanced that it defies comprehension. The descriptions given by various spiritual leaders about Babaji’s powers and knowledge suggest that Mahavatar Babaji, while remaining behind the scenes, has profoundly influenced spirituality in ways that are beyond the understanding of even the greatest sages and saints.
Initiation of Shankaracharya and Kabir
Paramhansa Yogananda states that Mahavatar Babaji had also given initiation to Jagadguru Shankaracharya and Kabir. According to Lahiri Mahasaya, Babaji has a group of disciples who live with him. The stories and accounts of Mahavatar Babaji are vast and varied. It is said that he listens to those who remember him with a true heart. Even today, people journey to the Himalayas seeking knowledge about his mysterious life and hoping to find him.
Infinite Leela of Babaji
Regarding Mahavatar Babaji’s powers, it is said that he can become invisible and does not require any food. It is believed that no one can meet Babaji without his wish. Kevalananda, one of the few who met Babaji, claimed to have met him twice. According to him, Babaji has the power to bring the dead back to life.
Babaji is known to speak in any language, though those who have met him say he usually speaks in Hindi. ‘Dera-danda uthaao’ is said to be one of Mahavatar Babaji’s favorite phrases. It is believed that he initiated Lahiri Mahasaya into Kriya Yoga and instructed him to lead the life of a householder yogi. Additionally, he is said to have taken Lahiri Mahasaya on a tour of a palace made entirely of gold.
