Veteran Congress leader and Rajya Sabha member Digvijaya Singh on Saturday reversed course on his earlier remarks that appeared to praise the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
Following widespread reactions, he said that people had misunderstood his comments and that he needed to clarify them.
He addressed the media, “I am a supporter of the organisation, but an opponent of the RSS and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. I have only praised the organisational strength of the RSS. I have always opposed the policies of the BJP and the RSS.”
Earlier, Singh had shared a 1996 photograph on social media. The image showed Prime Minister Narendra Modi alongside senior BJP leader LK Advani.
Taking to X, he posted, “I found this picture on the Quora site. It is very impressive. In what way did the grassroots swayamsevak of RSS and the workers of Jan Sangh @BJP4India sit on the floor at the feet of leaders and become the Chief Minister of the state and the Prime Minister of the country? This is the power of the organisation. Jai Siya Ram.”
Coinciding with a Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting in Delhi, the post quickly gained political attention.
By tagging Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Singh fueled speculation about an internal message aimed at the party leadership.

The photograph shows LK Advani seated on a chair, while Narendra Modi, then an organisational worker, sits on the floor nearby.
Responding to the controversy, Congress MP Kumari Selja, however, rejected claims that Singh had praised the BJP or RSS. She urged restraint and said that the party would communicate internal discussions through official channels.
“No one has praised anyone. Do not spread misleading information. Whatever is discussed in the meeting will be communicated officially,” she said, referring to the CWC meeting.
Seizing the opportunity, the BJP questioned the Congress leadership’s response to the episode.
BJP spokesperson CR Kesavan demanded a response from Rahul Gandhi. He alleged that Digvijaya Singh’s remarks exposed undemocratic practices within the party.
Taking to X, he posted, “Will Rahul Gandhi show courage & react to the shocking Truth Bomb dropped by Shri. Digvijaya Singh’s tweet which has totally exposed how Congress first family ruthlessly runs the party in a dictatorial manner and also how autocratic & undemocratic this Congress leadership is?”
