Jammu Resident Purchases Lunar Property
In a remarkable move, Rupesh Masson, a 49-year-old businessman and educationist from Jammu and Kashmir, made headlines just two days after India’s historic Chandrayaan-3 mission successfully landed on the Moon on August 23. Masson, who also serves as the regional director of UCMAS for Jammu and Kashmir and Leh, finalized the purchase of lunar real estate.
Masson revealed that he acquired land on the Moon at “Luna Earths Moon, Tract 55-Parcel 10772,” known as Lacus Felicitatis (Lake of Happiness). He completed the transaction with The Lunar Registry in New York City, and the certification was issued on August 25.

When asked about his motivation for buying a piece of the Moon, Masson expressed that this purchase symbolizes humanity’s curiosity to explore the unknown and represents our deeper search for meaning. He mentioned that the Moon can be seen as a beacon of hope for the future and a psychological escape for those grappling with the realities of climate change.
Interestingly, Masson is not alone in his lunar property ownership. He shared that around 675 celebrities and three former US presidents also possess extraterrestrial land on the Moon and other planets.
The success of India’s Chandrayaan-3 mission has given a significant boost to the lunar real estate sector. The Lunar Registry, in response to the surge in demand, acknowledged delays in processing and document submission due to high order volume. However, they assured customers that they are working to expedite the process and requested patience.

For those curious about acquiring lunar property, the option Masson used is purchasing a plot from The Lunar Registry. The current rate for land on this particular lunar location, Lacus Felicitatis, is ₹2,405 per acre ($29.07/acre) as displayed on their website. Other lunar locations, such as the Sea of Rains and Bay of Rainbows, are also available for purchase.
The International Lunar Lands Registry (ILLR), established in 1999, provides a standardized and simplified system for registering claims to real property on the Moon. This innovative concept has opened up new possibilities for individuals to participate in lunar exploration and investment in space real estate.
