On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the ongoing second phase of the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026 as an important moment for democracy, citing high voter participation across the state.
Speaking at a public event in Hardoi after inaugurating the Ganga Expressway, PM Modi stated, “Reports emerging from the ground indicate that Bengal is witnessing a massive voter turnout. Just as in the first phase, the public is stepping out of their homes in large numbers to cast their votes. Images of long queues have flooded social media.”
The Prime Minister added that the voting process was taking place in a free and open environment.
“People are casting their votes without any fear. This stands as a sacred symbol of the country’s Constitution and of our strengthening democracy,” PM Modi asserted.
The Prime Minister also urged voters to continue participating actively, noting that several hours of polling were still remaining.
Polling is being conducted across 142 constituencies, including Kolkata, along with districts such as North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Hooghly, Howrah, Nadia and East Burdwan. Authorities have deployed extensive security forces, including central units and state police, to ensure smooth voting.
Referring to recent election outcomes, PM Modi highlighted victories of the BJP-led alliance in Bihar and local body polls in Gujarat, saying these results reflected public support.
Expressing optimism for the ongoing elections, the Prime Minister noted, “I have full faith that in these five Assembly elections, the BJP will make a hat-trick of historic wins.”
PM Modi added that the results, scheduled for May 4, would further strengthen the country’s development agenda.
The Prime Minister also emphasised the need for continued infrastructure growth to support economic progress.
