On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Ganga Expressway in Hardoi, describing the project as a major step forward for infrastructure and development in Uttar Pradesh.
Addressing a public gathering, PM Modi stated, “The way Maa Ganga has been a lifeline of UP and this country, the same way, in this era of modern progress, this expressway passing in the vicinity of Maa Ganga will become a new lifeline for the development of UP.”
Highlighting the cultural significance of the project, the Prime Minister asserted, “I am delighted that the Uttar Pradesh government has chosen to name this expressway after Maa Ganga. This initiative not only reflects our vision for development but also offers a glimpse of our rich heritage.”
Project Details and Route
The project, built at a cost of around Rs 36,230 crore, stretches 594 kilometres. The plan outlines it as a six-lane access-controlled corridor, with provisions for expansion to eight lanes. It connects key districts including Meerut, Bulandshahr, Hapur, Amroha, Sambhal, Badaun, Shahjahanpur, Hardoi, Unnao, Raebareli, Pratapgarh and Prayagraj, linking different regions of the state.
The project will likely cut travel time between Meerut and Prayagraj from 10–12 hours to nearly six hours, improving connectivity and transport efficiency.
A key feature of the expressway is a 3.5-km emergency landing strip in Shahjahanpur, designed for both civilian and defence use.
The plan also develops the corridor as an economic hub, with manufacturing and logistics zones spread across about 2,635 hectares.
The improved connectivity will likely lower logistics costs, support industries, and help farmers access wider markets.
The expressway will also integrate with other major road projects in the state, forming part of a larger network aimed at strengthening connectivity and promoting balanced regional growth.
Authorities believe the project will generate employment, boost tourism, and contribute to long-term economic expansion in Uttar Pradesh.
