Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted Bihar’s Sitamarhi district as an example of innovative waste management during the latest episode of Mann Ki Baat. He spoke about the district’s efforts to address plastic pollution by converting discarded single-use plastic into valuable public infrastructure.

PM Modi said plastic waste has become a serious environmental concern worldwide as it remains in nature for years, affects soil quality, blocks drainage systems and pollutes water resources. He stressed the need for effective waste collection, scientific recycling and responsible reuse to overcome this challenge.
The Prime Minister praised Sitamarhi’s ‘Waste to Wealth’ initiative, which recycles single-use plastic waste into strong, long-lasting and environmentally friendly benches.
Each bench uses around 40 kilograms of collected plastic waste and is being placed in government schools, parks and other public locations.
PM Modi said the project provides practical benefits while creating awareness among students and citizens about protecting the environment.
The initiative teaches people that materials once considered useless can become valuable resources through proper recycling and modern technology.
PM Modi said Sitamarhi’s initiative proves that the message of ‘Reduce, Reuse and Recycle’ is gradually becoming a part of daily life. He added that the project demonstrates how communities can adopt sustainable practices and contribute towards environmental protection.
The Prime Minister also recognised the contribution of the district administration and its collaboration with local organisations in implementing the initiative.
During a documented phase of the project, officials collected nearly 8,000 kilograms of single-use plastic from four blocks — Dumra, Riga, Bajpatti and Runnisaidpur.
Officials recycled around 4,000 kilograms of this waste to manufacture 85 durable benches.
The Prime Minister said the initiative has created employment opportunities by supporting activities such as plastic collection, sorting, transportation and processing.
PM Modi described Sitamarhi’s approach as a practical example of the circular economy, where communities convert waste into useful products.
