On Friday, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee extended her congratulations to Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, who has recently assumed leadership of the Bangladesh interim government.
In her statement, CM Banerjee also expressed her desire for a swift resolution to the ongoing crisis in Bangladesh and a return to peace in the neighboring country.
Chief Minister Banerjee stated, “I offer my heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to Professor Muhammad Yunus and the new leadership in Bangladesh.
She expressed optimism for Bangladesh’s future, hoping the crisis would be resolved quickly and peace restored.
CM Banerjee emphasized the importance of improving relations between India and Bangladesh, expressing her hope for the development and progress of the Bangladeshi people.
She further asserted, “I extend my best wishes to all segments of Bangladeshi society; students, youth, workers, farmers, and women. May peace soon return to your nation, as it will also contribute to our well-being.”
Political analysts view CM Banerjee’s comments as particularly significant in light of ongoing discussions between the two countries on key bilateral issues.
Notably, the Indo-Bangladesh Farakka Treaty of 1996, which governs the sharing of the Ganges River’s waters, is due for renewal by 2026.
Additionally, the Teesta Water Sharing Accord remains a critical point of contention.
Banerjee has been vocal about her concerns regarding these treaties, arguing that decisions made at the national level could adversely affect West Bengal and North Bengal.
Earlier this year, on 24 June, she wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging him to involve state authorities in negotiations concerning these important agreements.
Her recent statements reflect a broader concern for maintaining stable and beneficial relations with Bangladesh, underscoring the interconnected nature of regional diplomacy and local impacts.
