On Friday, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla led a solemn tribute to the martyrs and freedom fighters of India’s Independence movement, marking the anniversary of the Quit India Movement, also known as Bharat Chodo Andolan.
The session began with a poignant reflection on the historic struggle for freedom.
Addressing the House, Speaker Birla highlighted the significance of 9 August 1942, when Mahatma Gandhi’s call for ‘do or die’ galvanized the nation.
Lok Sabha speaker remarked, “On this day, Mahatma Gandhi urged the nation to unite for India’s liberation, setting forth the powerful mantra of ‘do or die’. The Quit India Movement was a pivotal chapter in our freedom struggle.”
He lauded the widespread participation across all sections of society, noting, “The movement saw the involvement of individuals from all walks of life, including young women and various societal groups, showcasing the strength of peaceful resistance against injustice and oppression.”
Speaker Birla paid heartfelt tribute to Mahatma Gandhi and all the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for India’s freedom, pledging to uphold the ideals and values they championed.
He further stated, “We honor the Father of the Nation and all our freedom fighters. Today, we renew our commitment to the principles for which they made the ultimate sacrifice.”
In a separate announcement, Speaker Birla conveyed condolences for the passing of former MPs Iqbal Ahmed Saradgi, Squadron Leader Kamal Choudhary, and Ramesh Rathore.
Meanwhile, the House observed a moment of silence to honor these departed leaders, alongside tributes to Mahatma Gandhi and the freedom fighters.
PM Modi Hails Quit India Movement As Watershed Moment In Freedom Struggle
Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also paid homage to the Quit India Movement participants through a social media post on X.
