A Hindu organization organized a Mahapanchayat in Haryana’s Nuh today to talk about “completing” the Vishwa Hindu Parishad’s religious march, which was attacked there last month and led to a riot that left six people dead. This was more than two weeks after the violence. However, after the police refused to grant permission, it was moved to Palwal, which is around 35 miles distant.
At the Palwal-Nuh border’s Pondri hamlet, the mahapanchayat is now being held. According to Palwal Superintendent of Police Lokendra Singh, clearance was granted subject to a number of requirements.
“No one will deliver hate speeches. A case will be immediately registered if someone does. No one will bring weapons, sticks, batons, or any flammable object,” Mr Singh explained the conditions, adding that only 500 people are allowed, and it should end by 2pm. Ample security arrangements have been made, he added.
The discussion will mainly focus on whether the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) procession, also known as the “Brajmandal Dharmik Yatra,” should resume on August 28. The gathering is being organized by the community organization Sarv Hindu Samaj. According to sources, the mahapanchayat will also demand the release of young people detained in connection with riots and arson.
The Bajrang Dal and the VHP, two Hindu organizations, were told by the authorities that they could not hold the Mahapanchayat because of the current law and order situation. The meeting today will allegedly include representatives from the two groups.
Right after the incident, the Hindu Samaj Mahapanchayat organized a meeting in Gurugram despite being denied police permission, at which they demanded a boycott of Muslim business owners. There were also other speeches given in front of the group.
As they work to restore peace in the region, the police did not provide authorization for today’s meeting because they believed it may exacerbate already existing tensions.
VHP division minister Devender Singh told PTI, “All the Hindu groups decided to complete the yatra on August 28 which was attacked on July 31 in Nuh. Hope that the yatra will be completed with admiration and enthusiasm.”
A group of Haryana-based khaps, farmer organizations, and religious leaders held a “Mahapanchayat” on Wednesday in Hisar to denounce the violence and pass various resolutions encouraging peace and cooperation in the area.
Hindus, Muslims, and Sikhs all participated in the mahapanchayat, which was sponsored by the Bhartiya Kisan Mazdoor Union. The gathering decided that efforts to reestablish peace shall be made by members of all religions.
