Maha Kumbh 2025: A Historic Chapter In Women’s Empowerment

Under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the grand Maha Kumbh will likely make history not only as a spiritual event but also as a testament to women’s empowerment and inclusiveness.

The 13 Akhadas are preparing to uphold tradition during the upcoming Amrit Snan on Mauni Amavasya.

This year marks a transformative moment as the Akhadas prepare to induct a new generation of ascetics through the ‘diksha’ ceremony, with an unprecedented surge in participation from women.

The Maha Kumbh is to record history as more women ascetics receive ‘diksha’ than ever before.

Sanyasini Shri Panch Dashnam Juna Akhada’s saint, Divya Giri, revealed that more than 200 women will likely take sannyas diksha (initiation) under their Akhada during the Maha Kumbh.

Across all Akhadas, the number of women initiates will likely exceed 1,000, marking a milestone in Sanatan Dharma’s history.

Registrations for the diksha ceremony are already underway, with rituals tentatively scheduled for 27 January.

Highly Educated Women Lead The Spiritual Path

In Sanatan Dharma, renouncing worldly life and embracing asceticism often stems from spiritual awakening or significant life events, such as personal loss or disillusionment with materialism.

Divya Giri noted that many initiates this year include highly educated women seeking deeper self-realization through spirituality.

Among them is Radhenand Bharti, a PhD scholar in Sanskrit at Kalidas Ramtek University in Gujarat.

Originally from Rajkot, she shared that despite her privileged background in a prosperous business family, her spiritual journey led her to renounce worldly ties.

After serving her guru for 12 years, she is now prepared to embrace sannyas.

Recognition Of Women’s Contributions In Akhadas

The Shri Panch Dashnam Juna Akhada has been a pioneer in acknowledging and elevating the role of women within the Akhada system.

Recently, the Akhada renamed its women’s wing to Sannyasini Shri Panch Dashnam Juna Akhara, a prestigious title granted by its patron, Mahant Hari Giri, following requests from female ascetics.

For the first time, the women’s wing will have its own dedicated camp at the Maha Kumbh under its new title.

According to Divya Giri, this move represents progress in recognizing the contributions and aspirations of Matrushakti (women’s power) within the traditionally male-dominated Akhada framework.

This year’s Maha Kumbh will likely redefine spiritual inclusivity, empowering women and celebrating their significant role in Sanatan Dharma.
